Mr. Joel Kleehammer is the Acting Senior Principal for Institute Operation as well as the Principal for Program Support for Institute Operations. His duties include leading the travel, program support, and resident/mobile support teams in support of the ISG education and advisory program implementation. Mr. Kleehammer joined ISG in October 2021 as the Resident Advising Support Program Lead.
Prior to ISG, Mr. Kleehammer worked eight years at the Defense Security Cooperation Agency. While there, he was the Division Chief for Regional Planning and Program Design for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, a member of the Planning and Program Design team for U.S. Central Command, and a Country Program Director for countries in Western and Eastern Europe, the Baltics, Central Asia, the Middle East, and the Levant.
Mr. Kleehammer retired from the U.S. Army in 2017, after 23 years of active service. During his enlisted career, Mr. Kleehammer worked as a Russian linguist. While commissioned, Mr. Kleehammer served as an Artillery Officer, deploying in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, and as an Army Foreign Area Officer in the Former Soviet Union.
Mr. Kleehammer worked in Security Cooperation Offices in Ukraine and Tajikistan and was the Chief in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. He also worked for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency as the Deputy Chief of an Arms Control Inspection and Escort Team.
Mr. Kleehammer has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio and a Master of Arts in Russian and East European Studies from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He lives in Hollister, California with his wife Cheri. They have eight children and seven grandchildren.
