ISG Hosts Inaugural 'Climate and Environmental Security' Course

The Institute for Security Governance (ISG) recently concluded its inaugural "Climate and Environmental Security" Regional Course in Quito, Ecuador. Conducted in collaboration with several leading organizations in the climate security field, including the William J. Perry Center, adelphi, NATO Climate Change and Security Centre of Excellence, United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, and Pacific Disaster Center Global, the course brought together more than 30 agency, ministerial, and military participants hailing from Ecuador, Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Through discussions and exercises, course participants engaged on key themes such as security impacts of climate change, disasters and emergencies, environmental protection, and building climate resilient militaries. The aim of the course was to provide emerging and existing leaders with key knowledge and skills that enhance strategic decision-making in the domains where climate change and national security interests intersect. It also provided a valuable platform for learning and coordination, enriching ongoing climate security efforts in South America.


Accomplished course objectives included:


♦ Explore emerging climate threats and their impacts on national security.  
♦ Enhance understanding of the roles armed forces play in responding to climate and environmental risks. 
♦ Identify shared climate/environmental security challenges.  
♦ Develop knowledge of effective approaches for building climate resilient societies and ecosystems. 
♦ Build cross-community professional networks.
